For Monfalcone, boating has always been a sector of excellence. The city boasts the presence of numerous nautical and sailing centres connected to a wide range of sporting activities, boat storage, repair and maintenance activities. There are many centres with an important sporting history. The SVOC - Società Velica Oscar Cosulich, founded in 1933 and named after Captain Oscar Cosulich, who died at sea in the Bay of Portorož in an attempt to save his son's life, was founded as a sports centre for the workers of the Monfalcone Shipyard, as was the nearby Società Canottieri Timavo, founded in 1920 and still active today in training great champions. These were joined in 1988 by the Monfalcone section of the Lega Navale (Naval League), established with the support of the Navy. It is not just a sailing club but an organisation that spreads the passion for sailing, sporting activities and respect for the environment.
