The renovated seaside square enclosing the Nazario Sauro Marina on the Valentinis Canal, the Mediterranean’s northernmost point, is the direct link between the city centre and the sea. The pedestrian and bicycle promenade along the canal will connect with the new urban redevelopment area of the old coal-fired power plant. The canal and marina were built at the beginning of the 20th century with the extension of the De Dottori agricultural canal, which led to the construction of the navigable canal port, named after the mayor of the time, Valentinis. This work favoured the development and industrial growth of Monfalcone and the hamlet's transformation into the new City of Shipyards. Later, the protagonist of Monfalcone's growth was the Cantiere Navale Triestino (Trieste Shipyard), which stretches along one of the sides of the canal in the Panzano Basin, built in 1908 at the initiative of the Cosulich brothers. A nautical and sailing centre also develops along the canal.
