In Viale San Marco stands a fountain surmounted by the lion of St Mark. The first version of the memorial dating from the Venetian period, was irreparably damaged in 1910. It was rebuilt in 1912 by the sculptor Ferruccio Patuna, but the old base was transported to Aris, where it still stands, while fragments of the old stone lion are located in the garden of Palazzetto Veneto. It was called ‘the fountain of the lion along the trench’ because it was located on the avenue bordering the walls’ trench. A scaled-down copy of the old fountain, donated by the Adriaplast company, is also located in Via Sant’Ambrogio, behind the Duomo.
