Historical buildings on Piazza della Repubblica

Opposite the Town Hall is Casa Goffo, designed by engineer Dante Fornasir in 1929 and was destined to house the courthouse. In the years after World War II, the latter was housed in the building next to the staircase (salita Granatieri), formerly the headquarters of the Cassa di Risparmio Triestina (dating back to 1934).
On the staircase, two memorial stones placed in 1952 commemorate the Grenadier Brigade of Sardinia that reached the Rocca hill on 9 June 1915 during the First World War.
On the side towards the slopes of the Karst, overlooked by the Rocca, the square is characterised by the Casa Lonzar complex, reminiscent of a barchessa, consisting of two distinct architectural bodies and a third building in a raised position. In the courtyard between the two blocks of buildings is an octagonal stone well that drew groundwater-fed from an aquifer of the Roiello, an artificial canal now buried. An elegant elliptical body with stone ashlars in the centre echoes 18th-century motifs.
