The ‘Castelliere’ (fortified settlement) was a settlement composed of huts that stood on top of a rise, around which one or more drystone walls were built to protect the settlement and appeared between the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The Gradiscata, the Forcate, the Rocca, the Golas and the Moschenizza are the names of the 5 Castellieri above the built-up area of Monfalcone, located along an evocative path that departs from the Rocca and the Pietrarossa Visitor Centre. They were circular, leaning towards the southern side, more protected from the weather. Often defended by a trench, they were surrounded by a drystone wall about two metres wide. These constructions, of which some remain, testify to a sedentary pastoral society linked to Karst Heights.
